Textured Coatings of America (TEX•COTE®), a leading manufacturer of specialty coatings for residential and commercial buildings, has been named the “Top Green Coating Project” by the Journal of Architectural Coatings.

The designation came as a result of applying Texcote’s energy efficient COOLWALL® coating system to the Lake Mary, Fla., office building of Burke, Hogue, & Mills Associates Inc., an architectural firm that specializes in sustainable design. COOLWALL® Textured Primer and COOLWALL® SUPER-COTE were applied to the exterior of the facility and reduced the building’s energy demand by up to 21 percent. This helped Burke, Hogue, & Mills achieve LEED Silver status from the U.S. Green Building Council.

In choosing COOLWALL®, the Journal of Architectural Coatings considered the product’s ability to reduce carbon emissions, performance and the product and building’s lifecycle.

“We are proud to have received this recognition from the Journal of Architectural Coatings,” said Jay Haines, President and CEO of Texcote. “We design our textured and smooth coatings not only to be environmentally friendly solutions for all types of buildings, but also aesthetically pleasing for our customers. We are especially pleased that the Journal recognized COOLWALL® for the energy savings and low VOCs that it can provide.”

COOLWALL® incorporates heat reflective technology that reflects the sun’s infrared energy and UV radiation, lowering wall surface temperatures by as much as 40-degrees Fahrenheit even with the application of a dark-colored coating. The U.S. Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory has found that the technology can cut a home’s cooling-related energy costs by 22 percent.

There are other reasons why COOLWALL® is the leading environmentally-friendly product in its category and can earn LEED credits in three categories:

  • Highly fade resistant and long lasting. For homeowners, COOLWALL® more than doubles the coating’s life cycle
  • Low volatile organic compound (VOC) rating
  • Utilizes recycled glass materialsIn addition, the technology is available in over 570 colors and also helps to protect homes and building walls from severe weather storms, including hurricanes.

COOLWALL® and other TEX•COTE® products can be found on buildings across the country, including “big box” stores like Lowe’s and Ikea, corporate headquarters facilities, government buildings and historic buildings like Arizona State University’s “Old Main.”
