Looking Toward a Sustainable Future

Stuart Haines, President of TEX•COTE®

Sustainability has become a top priority for various industries, as businesses and organizations work toward creating a greener future. Textured Coatings of America, Inc. has always ranked sustainability as one of our highest values. This week, we address how we continue to lead the industry with our environmentally-friendly products for architects, engineers, and home improvement professionals alike.

Kennedy Speaks at COOLWALL® Symposium

In February of 2009, Mr. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. addressed sustainability and the environment at the first COOLWALL® Symposium. As a leader on tackling these issues, Mr. Kennedy could speak to the visionary and practical aspects of the environmental challenges our world continues to face today. Kennedy included points on how TEX•COTE®’s COOLWALL® Coating System can help architects and home improvement professionals meet the environmental demands present in the commercial, residential, and transportation industries.

Also in attendance at the symposium was Mr. Andre O. Desjarlais of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Mr. Desjarlais presented his findings from COOLWALL® research. He mentioned how TEX•COTE® COOLWALL® coatings can reduce cooling costs by as much as 21.9 percent.

Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Solutions

Architects, engineers, and home improvement professionals are faced with the challenge of designing, building, and renovating energy-efficient structures. TEX•COTE® products eliminate the challenge of finding an environmentally-friendly product because they are made sustainably and also work efficiently after applied. Our coating systems consist of primers that contain 20% Post-Industrial (Pre-Consumer) recycled glass in our formulations. The use of Pre-Consumer recycled materials qualifies for LEED™ credit on certain projects.

One of the goals of our products is to combat the Urban Heat Island Effect where temperatures are warmer than their surroundings in rural areas. You can meet the environmental demands with the TEX•COTE® COOLWALL® Coating System, a green exterior coating that is tested and proven by the Department of Energy (DOE). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also presented research and measures regarding the effect of cool walls along with how our products meet the criteria to reduce surface temperatures.

Superior Ratings and Certifications

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) developed a program to rate the radiative properties of roofing products and educate others on this information. Textured Coatings of America, Inc. is proud to say that our standard colors for the TEX•COTE® REFLECT-TEC® Coating System have been rated by the CRRC. You can learn more about the solar reflectance, thermal emittance, and solar reflectance index (SRI) of our products on the Rated Products Directory.

Textured Coatings of America, Inc. also offers Energy Star certified products. See the REFLECT-TEC® three-year solar reflection results to learn more about our advanced system’s impressive ability to maintain solar reflectance values during rigorous weather conditions in a variety of climates. We have also been a U.S. Green Building Council Member since 2005 and are proud to be a part of an organization that focuses on sustainable building.

Textured Coatings of America, Inc. was at the forefront of the green evolution before its emergence and popularity came to fruition. We were ahead of the industry before greener building objectives were imposed and will continue to enhance our products with these goals in mind.
