3. Product Description

BASIC USE
RAINSTOPPER® Sealers and Stains protect and preserve architectural substrates. After being treated, the substrates become resistant to staining, spalling, weathering, efflorescence, water intrusion, salt intrusion, fungi and mildews, deterioration, freeze-thaw scaling and reinforcing steel corrosion.

TYPES & COMPOSITION
RAINSTOPPER® RS100 Regular Clear Sealer - A clear, penetrating water repellent sealer for interior and exterior protection. Series 100 contains PLAZTEX, a hydrocarbon plasticizer which is water white, non-gloss and stain and oxidation resistant. RS100 Regular Clear Sealer is recommended for use on:

RAINSTOPPER® RS200 Heavy Duty Clear Sealer
Heavy Duty Clear is specially formulated for more porous surfaces. PLAZTEX hydrocarbon plasticizer content is 20%. RS200 is a 2-coat water repellent system which requires a 24-hour curing period under proper weather conditions prior to second coat application. Upon drying, the surface is enriched and slightly darkened with a low sheen.
RS200 Heavy Duty Clear Sealer is recommended over:
Concrete masonry, especially split face block and cinder block

RAINSTOPPER® RS400 Semitransparent & RS500 Opaque Stain Sealers

These solvent base resin products penetrate the masonry for water repellency, aesthetic staining, and greater depth of color while allowing moisture vapor to escape. RS400/500 are available in TEX•COTE® standard colors with special colors available upon request. RS400/500 sealer/stains are recommended for:

RAINSTOPPER® RS1750W Low VOC Stain Sealer

This is a microemulsifiable concentrate based on silanes and alkoxysilanes. When mixed with water a micro-emulsion is produced. This diluted form will impart water repellency to absorbent mineral surfaces. The typical dilution rate represented in testing reports is 4.5 parts water to 1 part RS1750W, although varying dilution rates can be used to achieve different degrees of water repellency. RS1750W Low VOC Sealer is also available in clear form. VOCs are less than 400 gm/L per ASTM D5090.

PACKAGING
RAINSTOPPER® Sealers are packaged in 5 gal (19 L) pails and 30 and 55 gal (114 and 208 L) drums.

COVERAGE RATES
Complete and full saturation with sealer material is required. Refer to Table 2 for typical coverage rates on different substrates.

5. Installation

COMPLETION OF RELATED WORK
Concrete must have cured to design strength prior to application of the RAINSTOPPER® Sealers. Roof and parapet top caps must be installed and sealed against water penetration prior to sealer application. Joint sealants must be in place and cured.

PREPARATORY WORK
Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and cured a minimum of 28 days prior to the application of the sealer. Surface contaminants such as dust, dirt, mildew, form oils, curing agents and loose substrate materials should be thoroughly removed. Large cracks, holes or voids must be filled with cement patching with TEX-BOND Cement Adhesive. The patching compound finish texture should match the existing adjacent finish surfaces.

Absorption Testing
All surfaces must be able to adequately absorb the RAINSTOPPER® Sealers. The sealers can be fully effective only when the solution is able to penetrate into the concrete or masonry pores and capillaries. To determine the surface absorption characteristics, observe the rate at which a small drop of the RAINSTOPPER® Sealer penetrates into the substrate. It will begin to penetrate immediately and be absorbed by the surface within a few seconds if the surface is sufficiently clean to allow penetration. If the surface retains an oil spot appearance, it must be cleaned.

APPLICATION, GENERAL
The RAINSTOPPER® Sealers can be applied by brush, roller or spray. The most effective method is to spray sealer onto the surface using 15 psi (103 kPa) low pressure positive displacement airless spray equipment. All spray equipment should be fitted with fan spray nozzles and then spray adjusted to a wet spray condition. Mist spraying can allow a substantial portion of the material to be lost to the atmosphere and slow down the rate of application. Deck areas should be sprayed using a spraybar type unit and other areas sprayed with hand spray units.

The spray equipment tank, hoses, etc, should be thoroughly clean, free of water, foreign matter and oil residue prior to use for spraying the RAINSTOPPER® Sealers. The coverage rate must follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Begin application at top of the surface that is requiring sealer and use vertical strokes to break the surface tension and initiate capillary action. Follow immediately with slow horizontal strokes with additional material in order to flood the surface. Horizontal surfaces will be completely flooded; vertical surfaces will have spray patterns that will run down 6" - 8" (152 - 203 mm) before soaking in when application rates are correct.

Substrate porosity of the material may require more than one application in order to satisfy the necessary absorption characteristics of the material surface.

If the applicator is unable to complete the entire application at one time, the place where the application was stopped should be clearly marked. Partially used containers should be properly sealed and protected from contamination by water or other foreign substances.

Provide a 24-hour minimum cure under proper weather conditions between coats.

APPLICATION, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
RS400/RS500, Except CMU Substrates
Stir material well before applying to any substrate. When spraying, apply initial coat of stain as heavy as possible without excess sags or rundowns. Immediately go back over the surface with the second, fog coat so that entire surface is uniformly wet to minimize lap marks.

When spraying large areas, use single direction passes, feathering out to reduce overlap marks. Establish a breakline conforming to the surface design breaks where possible. The first coat should not dry prior to the second coat application when spraying. Roller applied coats should cure 24 hours between first and second coat application.

RS400/RS500, CMU Substrates Only
All CMU surfaces require a first coat of RS200 Heavy Duty sealer according to the recommended coverage rate requirements. Avoid all sags or rundowns. Allow 24 hour minimum cure time under proper weather conditions before applying RS400 or RS500.

COVERAGE RATES
The estimated coverage rates shown in Table 2 will vary according to the porosity of surface and surface conditions. Only complete and full saturation with the sealer material will satisfy the surface porosity of the substrate being treated.

CLEAN UP
Clean up wet overspray on glass, metal, or painted surfaces immediately while still wet using either mineral spirits, xylol or toluene. Do not delay cleanup because dry RAINSTOPPER® adheres tightly to surfaces.
