PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 SUBSTRATE EXAMINATION3.02 SURFACE PREPARATION
- Examine substrates scheduled to receive coating system for conditions that may adversely affect the work. Do not apply specified coating systems until conditions are satisfactory.
- Commencement of painting work constitutes acceptance of substrates to receive the work.
3.03 MATERIAL PREPARATION
- General: Perform surface preparation, including cleaning procedures, pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions and as specified for each particular substrate and coating condition.
- Remove all fixtures and other items not scheduled to receive coating, or provide surface-applied protection prior to surface preparation and coating application. Upon completion of coating work in each area, reinstall removed items.
- All surfaces must be sound and clean prior to coating system application. Remove dust, dirt, mildew, form oils, and similar surface contaminants.
- Completely remove existing painted surfaces exhibiting loose, flaking, or oxidized paint. Use sandblasting, waterblasting, electric sanding, or wire brushing for paint removal, and pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions.
- Fill large cracks, holes, and voids with an appropriate patching compound. Texture patched finish to match existing adjacent finish surface.
- For cracks less than 1/8 inch wide, cut out and fill with "Flex-Patch Patching Compound".
- Seal wall joint intersections with urethane-based sealant.
- Mask all adjacent areas not scheduled to receive coating system.
- Interior Substrates:
- Remove all wallpaper paste residue, grease, tar, nicotine, and similar surface contaminants. Clean with TSP solution or acceptable equivalent. Thoroughly rinse.
- Remove and neutralize all mildew, fungus, and algae.
- Exterior Substrates:
- Remove incompatible release agents, form oils, and all foreign matter.
3.04 APPLICATION
- Mix and prepare coating system materials pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions.
- Store materials not in actual use in tightly covered containers. Maintain containers used in storage, mixing, and application of coatings in a clean condition, free of foreign materials and residue. Do not store in sunlight. Do not allow to freeze.
- Stir materials before application to produce a mixture of uniform density, and stir as required during application.
3.05 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
- General: Apply coating pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions. Use applicators and techniques best suited for substrate and type of material applied.
- Base Coat: Over properly prepared substrates, including primer if required, apply base coat at the specified coverage rate.
- Coverage rate, interior substrates:
150 to 250 sq. ft/gal.- Coverage rate, exterior substrates:
100 to 200 sq. ft/gal.- Primer must cure pursuant to manufacturer's instructions under acceptable environmental conditions prior to base coat application.
- Thoroughly agitate base coat material prior to use. Do not thin.
- Apply base coat as a uniform pinhole-free continuous film over entire surface to receive coating system.
- Permit base coat to dry fully prior to splatter coat application.
- Finish Coat: Apply finish coat over completed base coat, at the specified coverage rate. Provide tip size and air pressure for required texture pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions.
- Coverage rates:
- Fine texture: min. 150 sq. ft/gal.
- Medium texture: min. 100 sq. ft/gal.
- Heavy texture: min. 75 sq. ft/gal.
- Avoid starting and stopping midway on substrate. Continue to a natural break, such as a panel edge or comer.
- Flush equipment clean with water.
- Lace Texture: Apply base coat and finish coat as specified. While finish coat is still wet, use knockdown tool over finish coat in a fashion to obtain desired lace texture. Use light pressure when knocking down finish.
- Bark Texture: Apply base and finish coats as specified. While finish coat is still wet, roll over finish coat using light pressure.
- Cypress Texture: Apply base and finish coats as specified. While finish coat is still wet, roll over finish using light pressure. Use knock down tool over rolled finish with very light pressure.
- Optional Top Coats: Allow coating system, including texturing (if any), to cure for minimum 48 hours. Use of an optional finish topcoat must be indicated at the time of purchase for the MT/C Base and Finish Coats.
- Coverage rates:
- MT/C Clear Glaze: 250 to 300 sq. ft/gal.
- Sacrificial Graffiti Guard®: 150 to 250 sq. ft/gal.
- Graffiti Guard® IIIs System: refer to manufacturer's installation instructions.
- Stop immediately and contact your TEXCOTE® representative if any difficulties should occur during installation.
- During course of work, remove discarded coating materials, rubbish, can, rags and similar construction waste from the site at the end of each work day.
- Upon completion of the coating work, clean window glass and other coating-splattered surfaces. Protect work of other trades, whether to be coated or not, against damage by coating and finishing work. Correct any damage by cleaning, repairing, or replacing, and recoating, as acceptable to Architect.
