[Footer.html]TCA presents two more special purpose primers: X-100 Primer, a special blend of epoxy and vinyl resins reacted with a versamid curing agent, and 101 Metal Primer formulated with an alkyd and specially selected pigments to insure adequate intercoat adhesion between the metal substrate and coating. These two special purpose primers, treating entirely different surfaces, provide the much desired bonding and inter-coat adhesion.
PRIMERS RECOMMENDED OVER
X-100 Primer Baked Enamel Two-Part, Epoxy/Vinyl Fiberglass Panels Ceramic Glaze Surfaces Copper 101 Metal Primer Galvanized Steel Alkyd Base AluminumAPPLICATION RATES
X-100 Primer:
approximately 200 square feet per gallon
Caution: Mix THOROUGHLY before use. NO THINNING.101 Metal Primer:
up to 400 square feet per gallon
Note: Thinning not normally needed, but at 45¡F to 55¡F, up to 1 pint/gallon Mineral Spirits Maximum may be required.RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT
Both primers may be applied with conventional spray equipment, brush or roller.
DRYING/CURING/EXPOSURE TIMES
X-100 Primer:
2-4 Hours after application (while still uncured and tacky) apply coating over X-100 Primer.
Note: Do not exceed overnight dry. X-100 Primer must be tacky at coating application.101 Metal Primer:
To Touch: 3-4 hours, minimum Recoating: 24 hours Exposure: 2 weeksNote: if exposed more than 2 weeks to ultraviolet, surface must be re-primed.
CLEAN UP/CONTAINERS/STORAGE
X-100 Primer:
- Clean up with MEK immediately after use to prevent clogging of material lines.
- 1 gallon and 5 gallon kits
2-1 gal. containers half full, mix full gallon.
2-5 gal. containers half mix full 5 gallon.- Pot Life: 1 to 2 days after mixing.
Mix thoroughly before using.- Shelf life 6 months under room temperature. Containers shall remain upright and tightly closed. Flammable, keep away from heat & open flame. See limitations section
101 Metal Primer:
- Clean up with mineral spirits.
- 1 gallon and 5 gallon containers
- Color: white, some tints available on request.
- Shelf life 6 months based on following:
Containers shall be stored upright and air tight in dry place at temperature above 45¡F and not exceeding 100¡F AVOID FREEZING PRODUCT. Any skins formed on surface of material shall be removed prior to moving containers, mixing or using.SURFACE PREPARATION/GENERAL DATA
- Old galvanized steel, aluminum & copper, shall be wire brushed or lightly sandblasted to remove all dust, dirt, rust, loose mill scale, paint and other foreign matter from surface.
Caution: Do not remove or chip galvanized coating.- New galvanized steel, aluminum & copper, degrease with either solvents such as toluene, xylene or 7% TSP (TriSodium Phosphate solution in water). When solvents are used, rinse surface with clean solvents. When TSP is used, rinse surface with clean water, all surfaces shall be wiped off with clean cloth. Vapor degreaser suitable on aluminum.
- Clean and degrease baked enamel and ceramic tile surfaces with 7% TSP solution as in item 2.
- Surface etching of galvanized steel, aluminum & copper. Following degreasing step above, apply TCA's Redi-Tex, a surface etching compound that reacts with surface to give "tooth" to the primer. Using rubber gloves & rags, mop or brush, apply Redi-Tex full strength or diluted with 3 parts water (dilution preferred during hot, dry weather). The surface changes color immediately upon application. Rinse surface with water, allow to dry. Entire surface must be treated. Take precautions to avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Note: When using TSP dilution, excess solution can be removed with a squeegee, rags or sponge.
APPLICATION OF PRIMERS
X-100 Primer
Surface shall be sound, clean and dry prior to application of primer. If surface has been factory primed, advise TCA of type to avoid incompatibility and loss of adhesion.
Mixing:
Using two half full containers, as purchased, of resin (Part A) and curing agent (Part B) mix thoroughly prior to use.
Caution: Pot life 1-2 days after mixing.Application:
Using brush, roller or conventional spray unit, apply at 200-300 square feet per gallon. Allow 2-4 hours cure and apply coating while X-100 is still semi-cured and tacky.
X-100 Primer
Apply 101 Metal Primer only after surfaces have been cleaned, degreased and etched as above. If surfaces have been factory primed, advise TCA of type to avoid incompatibility and loss of adhesion.
Application:
Apply at coverage rate of approximately 250 square feet per gallon (up to 400 square feet/gallon). Allow 24 hour dry under ideal weather conditions prior to coating.
Caution: Do not apply either primers when air or surface temperature are below 45¿ F or above 100¡F. Do not apply if rain is imminent. Roof & joints shall be sealed against water penetration prior to priming.
LIMITATIONS FOR ALL PRODUCTS HEREIN
- Metal surfaces shall be cleaned, degreased and etched per instructions herein.
- Surfaces must be dry sound and sealed against water penetration prior to priming.
- Do not apply over frozen or damp surfaces or when rain is imminent, Avoid freezing product.
- Product must be used within shelf life and pot life, and stored as described herein.
- If Metal Primer 101 is exposed to ultraviolet more than 2 weeks, surface shall be re-primed.
- Primers are not recommended for below grade use.
- Remove any skins from top of material prior to moving containers, mixing or using.
- Air temperature during application shall be 45¡F and rising, and not exceed 100¡F.
- If surface has been factory primed, advise TCA of type used to avoid possible loss of adhesion or incompatibility.
- Caution: Primers, in liquid form, may contain Petroleum Distillate which will cause serious illness or death if swallowed, or if large quantities are absorbed into body. Use only in well ventilated areas. Use face mask with filter if used in poorly ventilated areas. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call physician at once. Do not store near heat. Keep away from children in liquid form.
- X-100 Primer shall not cure longer than overnight (2-4 hrs. after application preferably). Primer must be tacky at time of coating application.
